Bad weather is a roof’s biggest enemy and the effect is easily noticeably by the condition of the guttering, fascias and soffits.

Gutter Damage

The most common cause of gutter damage is the build-up of debris such as shingle, branches, leaves, nesting materials and even dead birds in the valleys and downpipes. If your gutters are not cleared regularly, debris will decompose and become compact, clogging up the gutters. Rainwater will have nowhere to run and can back-up and pool on the roof resulting in mould and damp problems, tile damage, rotting fascias and soffits and damage around windows and Velux seals.
Freezing weather can also cause severe damage to gutters. Frozen water, trapped in the downpipes will eventually cause them to crack and break. Trapped water will stagnate, attracting pest infestations and causing blocked drains to produce foul odours.
Gutters can also be damaged by leaning heavy ladders against them, falling tree branches that are close to the house and storm and wind damage.

Fascia Damage

Fascias are the bands around the edge of the roof. They are usually wooden or vinyl. They add an aesthetically pleasing finish to the roof, giving it a smoother line. The fascia also supports the last row of tiles and protects the roof from moisture damage by preventing water from entering the interior of a property. However, Fascias get a fair beating from the elements and signs of rot damage are common, especially if they are made from wood.

Soffit Damage

Soffits are made from wood or vinyl and are located beneath the roof overhang. The roof overhang helps to regulate the temperature in the attic area, preventing it from getting too hot. Soffits protect the rafters from the weather and often have vents to help increase the circulation of air around the home. However, soffits also tend to attract small animals such as squirrels. They are perfect nesting sites for wasps, and cluster flies and ants may enter the vents to seek shelter. These pests can create cracks and holes in the soffits, allowing water to penetrate through to the attic.

The Benefits of PVC

When it comes to choosing the right materials for your gutters, fascias and soffits, PVC can be a better alternative to metals and wood for a number of reasons.
Wood penetrates more easily into wood causing split, cracked paint, wood rot and structural damage. Wood also provides limited protection from the elements.
PVC is very strong. It can withstand the weight of snow and ice better than other materials. Gutters are manufactured as one continuous unit so you won’t have the problem of corrosive seams.
PVC does not need painting and comes in a variety of colours. It is durable, waterproof and rot proof.
